CARPE DIEM - seize the day.
This was the vibrant message guest speaker Kate Turkington gave to the 125 ladies who attended the launch of the DICE 100 Ladies Luncheon Club last Friday.
Kate is one of South Africa's best-known broadcasters. Her Sunday night three-hour live broadcast 'Believe it or not' on Talk Radio 702 is the longest-running radio talk show in South Africa - 14 years old in August.
She is a writer of renown, communicator, traveller and travel writer.
What made this such a telling message was the conviction by Kate that the meaning of life is life. She bases her beliefs on her mode of living and a wealth of experiences, to seize the day as it arises and not to shy away from challenges - yesterday has gone, the future never comes, but today you seize the moment.
This polished orator voted as the top woman speaker in South Africa had the audience in the palm of her hand. Her wit, her enthusiasm and seemingly endless font of amusing anecdotes during her worldwide travels and other experiences, found great favour with the guests who clamoured for more.
As an opening number the little folk of Amangwe Village, under the guidance of their loving teacher Lindiwe, entertained with song and dance. Aged between two and five years they stole everyone's heart to the extent that the jubilant DICE committee raised crèche fees for each of 22 little souls for one year. Once again the community of Zululand opened their hearts and wallets.
Tribute must be paid to Operations Manager Heather Poulsen and her team of assistants who created an ambiance of elegance and style in the newly renovated conference centre of the Protea Hotel, Empangeni.
Evidence of the enjoyment of the buffet lunch was the constant re-filling of platters, by observant staff, of the delicious spread to please every palate.
Appreciative thanks to Marlene Goodman of Decor Boutique Mtunzini, who kindly provided the table cloths, chair covers and decor which enhanced the event.
'The purpose of the relaunch of the DICE 100 Luncheon Club is not merely a fund-raising function for those in need,' said the founder Reg Anthony.
'It provides a venue for old friends to renew their friendships and to relax and for new friendships to be formed for the enrichment of life,' she said.
Plans are already underway for the next luncheon which will be held end August/September.
