Two mid-week league fixtures were held at the Empangeni Hockey Club.
Unizulu Ladies played Vets Ladies and lost 10-0.
The goal scorers were Ailsa Bignaut (2), Cathy Brown (3); Alta Scott; Fran Harris and Lesley Sharp (3).
Empangeni Men then played Unizulu, who displayed determination and kept possession by utilising the short ball.
This tactic had Empangeni scrambling on defence and it was a truly remarkable game that switched from side to side.
If it were not for a blackout, the result might have been quite different as Unizulu kept control of the ball.
Their ladies provided fantastic support on the side of the field as always.
The final score was 2-1 to Empangeni, with Leigh Hornby scoring two goals and Milo Xulu scoring Unizulu's only goal.
Sunday league
Four more league games were played on Sunday, an extremely hot day in Richards Bay.
The Unizulu Ladies' side was first up against Vets and the Unizulu girls played a much stronger defensive game than Thursday night, with the final score 5-1 to Vets.
Vet's goal scorers were Debbie Brink (4) and Fran Harris whilst Lucia Sithole from Unizulu converted one for her team.
The second ladies game was between Richards Bay and eShowe and the final score was 4-0 to the hosts.
eShowe Ladies showed courage and conviction and defended well, not allowing the Bay many scoring opportunities. Michelle Emery, Karen Raubenheimer, Genevieve Ferraris and Jolene Stokes scored the goals for Richards Bay.
The Richards Bay men versus eShowe was a great game to watch.
eShowe scored first and Richards Bay came back to 1-1 before half time.
Great skill and determination was shown during the second half as Richards Bay picked up the game to a faster level of hockey, wearing away at the eShowe defense.
The final score was 5-2 to Richards Bay, with Sean Naidoo and George Sithole each scoring two goals and Dane Swarts netting the fifth. Paul Kingaby and Roy Cope scored eShowe's goals.
Better show
Empangeni men defeated a much improved Unizulu side by 5-3.
Unizulu have been improving with leaps and bounds during the league and have proven to be a contender to reckon with for the upcoming seasons.
Empangeni's goals were scored by Leigh Hornby (2), Johan van Vuuren (2) and Rodrick Ownen.
Wayne Mbhele scored two goals for Unizul and Milo Xulu scored the third.
Zululand League games will resume on 25 May for the penultimate round as the selected Zululand Country District teams play the Natal Country District Quadrangular tournament this weekend at Kearsney College.
The Natal Country District sides are selected at this tournament to participate in the South African Country District tournaments which are held at separate venues for the men and ladies at the end of June.
Good luck to all the teams!
