CITY of uMhlathuze Municipal Manager, Dr Tonie Heyneke says the municipality would make necessary arrangements to keep all services running as smoothly as possible on Wednesday in response to a proposed Cosatu-led strike.
Economic and public activity in KZN is expected to be hard hit following Cosatu's announcement of a one-day provincial stay-away.
The trade union notified all corporate and public service establishments on Friday afternoon of the impending shutdown.
According to Provincial Secretary, Zet Luzipo, Cosatu has scheduled Wednesday as the day of unprecedented mass demonstration against the rising fuel, interest rate, electricity and food costs.
'There shall be no public transport on that day since taxi associations and motorists in general, will form part of the demonstration from all corners of the province.
'Public servants, industrial workers and other workers in various sectors will be part of the demonstration,' said Luzipo.
Essential services
Essential services departments have also been urged to make provisions for the transportation of their staff. 'The criminal justice system, the CCMA, hospitals and clinics should consider rescheduling their functions that had been set for Wednesday.
'We are making this call because we wish members of the public to employ precautionary measures against any possible inconvenience,' added Luzipo.
