A NEW employment policy is in the pipeline for the Provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate which is causing great concern among employees.
Instead of working overtime, more traffic officers will be employed and they will work in three shifts.
This was according to the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Bheki Cele, during his visit to Empangeni.
'Normal overtime procedures will remain in force until the new policy is implemented, which is expected to happen as soon as December,' said Cele.
This would have 'severe consequences' for traffic officials according to disgruntled sources at the Empangeni Road Traffic Inspectorate, 'unless salaries are subsidised in some way'.
The proposed policy, which is yet to be finalised, would potentially mean that officers would work two days and two nights on and four days off rotation, which would mean that working on a Sunday would not be considered as 'overtime'.
Officers are presently more then willing to work overtime in order to boost their monthly income.
'Financially it would have a major impact on the officers. A lot of guys depend on the over-time pay, myself included,' said one traffic officer.
At the time of going to print, the Department of Transport had not yet responded to questions regarding salaries and why the new policy was to be implemented.
