Counting cost of wild fires

The desolate shell of a burnt out homestead is one of many marking the Zululand landscape

Tanya Waterworth

FAMILIES were left devastated by the death of loved ones and the latest toll from the fires that raged through Zululand two weeks ago indicate that close to 1 000 homes were burned to the ground.
As the tragedy of those left with nothing unfolded, the generous Zululand community has yet again come to the fore to help.
With the uThungulu District Municipality's Disaster Centre fully mobilised, foldaway houses and tents were distributed to communities in the affected areas of Nkandla, Ntambanana, uMlalazi and Mthonjaneni.
The Empangeni Rotary Club also gave a substantial donation of well over a 1 000 blankets and foodstuff.
Public Relations Manager for the District Municipality, Rekha Naidoo, said that many farmers also brought in fresh vegetables, while the uThungulu staff showed their strong spirit of giving, bringing in clothing, bedding and food for the homeless.
