AS Richards Bay Rotary members gear up for their 25th anniversary on Monday, there was also time to reminisce to when it all started in 1983.
The Club was chartered on 6 October and was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Empangeni with the prime movers being Stan Hawkeswood and Tom Lindley.
Taking up the position as first president was John Batho, assisted by Board Members Gerhard Engelbrecht, Peter Lemmer, Paul Camp, Gert van Rooyen, Andrew Hutcheson, Mike Dun and Francis Uys.
Current president, Peter Terry-Lloyd, said at that time there were 24 members, all stalwarts of the Richards Bay community.
'The first members were people who were part of the town's development and men of integrity and commitment,' said Terry-Lloyd.
He added that from the beginning, the Club adopted an approach of fellowship through service to the community with a strong support base through the Rotary Anns.
They also focused on attracting management of big industries and businesses as members in order to provide an alternative platform for industry to serve the community.
