| Pretty Boy makes a plan No self-respecting Love Bird would be seen without any tail feathers, so when Pretty Boy lost his, he came up with a plan to uplift his image Dave Savides SAD and embarrassed after losing his tail feathers, 'Pretty Boy', a Love Bird from Birdswood (where else?) has decided to use the Zululand Observer to change his image. Tired of waiting for Mother Nature to replace his lost glory, he does the job himself through a trick untaught and inexplicable to his owner Elsie Raynardt. 'Pretty Boy flew into our house three months ago with just one tail feather left, which he soon lost. 'But about a month ago, he started to make a plan,' said Penny, who invited us to a demonstration at the cage he shares with three budgies (yes, birds of a feather do flock together). At regular intervals, from a pattern in his head, the talented designer uses his claws and beak to neatly shred strips of paper and form artificial 'feathers' from the newspaper on the bottom of his cage. Once he has accumulated and inspected a few nicely crafted tail feathers, he inserts them somewhere in his nether regions and instantly his masculine pride is restored - although not for long. The 'feathers' have a habit of falling out from the undercarriage, and there is an endless cycle of 'cut and paste' - a bum job, to say the least. This 'bottom' line on bird behaviour has stumped even Meerensee breeding expert Josua 'Voëltjie' van Niekerk. 'I have heard of birds pulling out their feathers because of stress, but never of them replacing missing feathers.' Pretty Boy also shows an unusual level of hostility, often attacking those people who dare come near. Perhaps he just doesn't like to be disturbed while he is not looking his best.
