Address youth's disrespect

Sethembile Sibiya

ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema's statement that he was 'prepared to kill for Zuma', was just another example of the lack of respect for the rule of law displayed by some of the country's youth.
That was the opinion of the President of the National Teachers' Union (Natu), Siphosakhe Ngcobo, at last week's 90th celebration function at the Imbizo Conference Centre in Empangeni.
'It is not only Malema who will suffer if things go wrong in this country. South Africa belongs to all of us,' he said. Ngcobo's speech gave a critical review of the behaviour of youth in general. He said the shortage of teachers in the country was largely due to the the lack of forethought applied by government when they closed down teachers' training colleges shortly after the 1994 elections.
'The future of this country lies in the hands of the youth, therefore as teachers you must work twice as hard to educate the young minds,' he said.
People who attended the function, which stretched over three days, seemed to be in general agreement with Ngcobo's sentiments.
'Malema should have been more polite when talking about his allegiance to Zuma. He was talking with his emotions, forgetting that there was an audience listening to him,' said Bonginhlahla Mnqxadi, one of the Union members that attended the function.
Wednesday's event also saw the unveiling of the Wall of Honour at the Imbizo Centre, a wall on the outside of the Centre with the names of past Natu presidents. It was unveiled by Herbert Mkhize and retired Unizulu Professor, Otty Nxumalo.
