NO fewer than eight Empangeni Rugby Club players made the grade into the KZN's junior provincial squads for the 2008 season after trials held recently at the Old Boys' Club, Riverside.
Five of them - Sphlephelo Mayaba (prop), Lee Thompson (lock), Senzo Sibiya (wing), Richard Aingworth (centre) and Francois Laatz (wing) have been selected for the U21 squad.
The remaining three - Brad Mitchell (front row), Wessel Cronje (loose-forward) and Justin Manuel (wing) will turn out for the U19 team.
Four of these players - Mayaba, Thompson, Sibiya and Aingworth - have had the added advantage of playing in the Rhinos' first team, which has no doubt played a major role in helping them to gain the selectors' nod.
Competition was extremely tough, but those selected acquitted themselves well in what was another great day for Empangeni and the Zululand Rugby Sub Union.
