BROTHERS Daryl, Wesley and Brett Bartho, together with new crew member, Brad Arthur, recently participated in the Guinjata Species Fishing Competition in Inhambane, Mozambique.
They fished on their new boat 'Gone Fishin... again' that they won last year for coming first.
This is one of the largest fishing competitions in the southern hemisphere and 93 boats entered this year. However, the fishing was not great with only four billfish being tagged and released compared to last year's 60. The Bartho brothers were in the lead on Day One by 46 points, after only being able to fish for three hours because the wind came up and all boats were called in.
Day Two was also called off because of strong winds and big swells. On Day Three the brothers fell into second spot because they were unable to catch the species and remained in that position until the fifth and final day when they were beaten by eight points into third spot. Last year's winning points were 1368.2, compared to this year's 459.20 - a great indication of how poorly the fish were biting. The Bartho boys' second day's points last year were 474, 14.8 points more than the total for the five day's of fishing this year.
About 15 boats didn't even weigh a single fish this year.
Wesley won first prize for the biggest barracuda and also broke the record of last year (25kg) with his 25.8kg fish.
Although a little disappointed, the boys will be back next year to fish the compo again.
