EXCELLING in Maths and Science is their goal and for a group of learners from rural areas in Zululand, hard work and determination coupled with corporate backing is ensuring their dreams come true.
The 32 Grade 11 learners from eight schools in Zululand have been incorporated into the Science Academy, spearheaded by Exxaro KZN Sands in partnership with Grantleigh College.
The learners hailing from Amangwe High, Matamzana Dube High, Dlamvuzo High, Mcabango High, Dover High, Tholokuhle High, Hluma High and Qhamuka High, this week participated in the Careers in Mining Week. Operational for the past five years, the Maths and Science development programme runs from Grade 10 to 12, with the aim of learners eventually attaining distinctions in both Maths and Science in Grade 12.
Learners are mentored, monitored and assisted by Grantleigh College educators and mentors as well as the Unizulu Science Centre.
Distinctions
And the extra Maths and Science classes offered to the students throughout the year at Grantleigh, are certainly paying off with seven students achieving 10 distinctions in Maths and Science in the last term.
With the doors of opportunity open for future employment, Exxaro KZN Sands Manager Sustainable Development - Annalien Fouché, urged learners to excel with distinctions in order to receive possible bursaries or employment at Exxaro KZN Sands.
'The Career in Mining Week focuses on intensive Maths and Science training and individual and career guidance.
'All students achieving above 75% and who want to study in the mining field can be very positive of obtaining a bursary from Exxaro Resources.
Remember, if it is to be, it is up to me.
'Exxaro, your parents and school can assist you, but if you do not decide that you are going to be the best, nobody else will do it for you,' said Fouché.
Positive
Obtaining extra Maths and Science tuition comprising theory and practical experiments as well as vital career guidance, the learners gave positive feedback after their informative session.
'I enjoy Maths and Science but I didn't know what career to choose. We were advised that when choosing a career, it must not be based on the money but because we love it.
'Now, I know the career I want to pursue. I want to become a Metallurgical Engineer,' said Joseph Mathaba.
'This is a great opportunity for us. Most of our schools are located in rural areas. Some of us don't even have equipment to do practical work.
' We benefited a lot as if there is something we don't understand at school, we are able to get extra tuition. We are also fortunate to have a chance of getting a bursary,' added Mlondolozi Qwabe.
