THREE male suspects were arrested after the SAPS Flying Squad and security company CRG chased them down following an attempted hit on a jewellery store in Empangeni on Monday.
Staff at the store, situated in the shopping centre between Game and Sanlam Centre, were too fast for the men and hit the panic button before they could make off with any cash or goods.
Security company Control Risks Group responded to information gathered from their security guard, who was on duty in the shop next to the jewelry store, and waited for a car of the right description on a regularly-used escape route.
CRG and the Flying Squad surrounded the car on the R102 at the Port Durnford turnoff, and found two unlicensed firearms in the brand new Jeep.
Although it has not been confirmed, the men are suspected to have been involved in a spate of robberies that have hit Empangeni and surrounds the past month, including a robbery that took place on the same day at Power Bakeries in Tanner Road.
Police are still waiting for fingerprint results, and the men are being held at the Mtunzini holding cells before their appearance in court, which is scheduled for this week.
'A lot of investigation is still going on in this case, and we want to be sure we have everything right,' said Supt Musa Khaba from the eSikhawini Police Station, who was at the scene of the arrest.
