RICHARDS Bay Minerals has been named category winner in the First National Bank KZN Top Business Awards 2008.
RBM, which employs 1 750 permanent staff and as many as 5 000 contractors, was especially praised for its social investment initiatives, job creation and skills development in its surrounding communities. Commenting on winning the award, Bruce Beath, Acting Managing Director, said, 'RBM is fully committed to managing its operations in line with good corporate governance and government's legislation; as well as for the long-term sustainability of all stakeholders, which includes its four host communities.
'The company has just embarked on a R1.2-billion Tailings Treatment Plant project that will not only extend the life of the Mine, but will offer additional employment opportunities.
'RBM recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a 24% BBBEE shareholding in the company and a 2% Employee Share Participation Scheme, which currently is the largest such deal in KZN.
'Whilst the company goes about its business without any expectation of public recognition, it is a great honour to have been judged the winner of this prestigious award.'
